B-Unbound
New forms of learning in the world outside school
WHAT IS IT?
B-Unbound is an opportunity for young people to reconnect with learning in a setting outside of school. If you are a young person not currently involved in school, work or study, and unsure how to get a plan for your future, this could be for you.
It's called B-Unbound because you are 'unbound' from schools, timetables, tests, or other people's expectations, and have the freedom to work out what you want to learn about, and how you prefer to learn it.
B-Unbound understands that past learning experiences at school may not have worked for you, and that you would need something pretty different to get you interested in learning again.
B-Unbound may just be that opportunity for you.
Operating from a 'Base Camp' in the community with a supportive educator, and just 17 learners, B-Unbound is designed to help you to:
- discover and explore some interests that you might have,
- do some learning in the real world alongside mentors who share your interests,
- build up some new skills or knowledge, and
- start to get ideas about your next steps in life.
We call this being a 'navigator' because you are driving your own learning but with the guidance and support of a 'co-navigator' who is a trained educator.

I didn't realise that there was a better option for me, so I didn't try very hard at school. And then I came here and I realised that I could be better and I realised that I am kind of smart.

I had a few mentors and so being out in the workplace, meeting my crowd of people, it's just guided me on the right path.
How does it work?
B-Unbound is run by Big Picture Learning Australia, which is a not-for-profit organisation that uses a new, personalised design learning in 45 settings around Australia. Big Picture Learning can offer you its International Big Picture Learning Credential if you'd like to gain a qualification for the learning you do as part of B-Unbound.
B-Unbound has the support of the Tasmanian Department for Education, Children and Young People.
As a 'navigator' in B-Unbound, you will meet two days a week at Base Camp with your co-navigator and other B-Unbound navigators. Here you might explore some interests, plan some learning activities, do some independent research, look up places and people of interest that you want to connect with.
On other days of the week you might go on group excursions to find out what opportunities exist in your community, do an internship with a mentor, or attend a course or workshop in the community that interests you.
At Base Camp you will have access to a laptop and the internet, your own workspace and kitchen facilities.
What will it cost?
There is no cost involved in joining B-Unbound because it is supported by the Tasmanian Department for Education, Children and Young People.
When will it start?
This is a pilot program that will begin in February 2025 and run for ________________.

I like this way of learning. I like being able to self-drive myself. I already know what I want to do. I want to work with animals, right? I don't need Shakespeare. So Big Picture really enabled me to focus and hone in on that one thing.
